I got the f & g's for my next book, Jack's Path of Courage: The Life of John F. Kennedy, written by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by me. If you don't know what an "f & g" is- it stands for "folded and gathered". Before the real books are printed, all the pages and the jacket are folded and gathered together so the publisher can start showing it to booksellers and librarians, and so the editor, art director, author and illustrator can look it over for anything that needs to be changed. For example, the red needs to be toned down a bit on the jacket. He's supposed to have a tan, but it looks more like a sunburn.
The book comes out in October. Here's a sneak peek:
Matt. Congratulations — outstanding! Looks like a dream project...but wait, can you stick to the great Mainers though and leave some MA natives for us MA illustrators to do!? What about Muskie or Margaret Chase Smith!? Surely they'll need a book, too.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though: GREAT! I also love the typography. Is this CWP?
Wow, someone commented on my blog! I don't even know what to do... Thanks Scott! This was a dream project. Hey, I'll stop making books about MA natives when you stop making books about spoons. Spoons clearly belong to Maine- how else would we eat our chowder?
ReplyDeleteIsn't the lettering great? Amazingly, it was done BY HAND by John Stevens. And no, this one isn't Candlewick. It's part of Doreen's "Big Words" series with Disney-Hyperion (Martin's Big Words, Abe's Honest Words...).
Hey Matt!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! I guess this is another reason to celebrate at Flatbread!
We love Martin's Big Words, and we can't wait to see your contribution to this great series! Congratulations!!!!!
Jody, Bob and Zoe!
